On peaceful coexistence: is the collapse postulate incompatible with relativity?

چکیده

In this paper, it is argued that the prima facie conflict between special relativity and the quantum-mechanical collapse postulate is only apparent, and that the seemingly incompatible accounts of entangled systems undergoing collapse yielded by different reference frames can be regarded as no more than differing accounts of the same processes and events. Attention to the transformation properties of quantum-mechanical states undergoing unitary, non-collapse evolution points the way to a treatment of collapse evolution consistent with the demands of relativity. r 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Rational and Religious Roots of Peaceful Coexistence with the Religious Other

In this article, rational arguments and religious teachings that underlie the necessity of peaceful coexistence with the followers of other religions will be discussed. Moreover, the core impediments to coexistence, such as lacking self-knowledge and being ignorant about the others, will be examined, and practical ways for effectively interacting with the followers of other religions will be su...

Nonlinear modification of quantum mechanics

In order to prevent “unavoidable” break-down of the “peaceful coexistence” between foundations of quantum theory and relativity I propose a new type of a quantum gauge theory (superrelativity). This differs from ordinary gauge theories in the sense that the affine connection of this theory is constructed from first derivatives of the Fubini-Study metric tensor in the projective Hilbert space of...

The EPR Argument in a Relational Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

It is shown that in the Rovelli relational interpretation of quantum mechanics, in which the notion of absolute or observer independent state is rejected, the conclusion of the ordinary EPR argument turns out to be frame-dependent, provided the conditions of the original argument are suitably adapted to the new interpretation. The consequences of this result for the ‘peaceful coexistence’ of qu...

The No-Signalling Theorems: A Nitpicking Distinction

Shortly before his untimely death, John Stewart Bell remarked that his famous theorem tells us “that maybe there must be something happening faster than light, although it pains me even to say that much” [emphasis added] [14, p. 90]. Bell’s reaction to his own momentous discovery is puzzling: why should it have pained him or anyone else? Should we not be excited and fascinated by the possibilit...

Entanglement and the Linearity of Quantum Mechanics

Optimal universal entanglement processes are discussed which entangle two quantum systems in an optimal way for all possible initial states. It is demonstrated that the linear character of quantum theory which enforces the peaceful coexistence of quantum mechanics and relativity imposes severe restrictions on the structure of the resulting optimally entangled states. Depending on the dimension ...
